I combed Old Bailey records to recover vivid stories of early modern medical practice. In 16th and 17th century London physicians were mugged, had periwigs and surgical instruments stolen, or set upon by mobs. Case studies include William Marriott, Salvator Winter, barber-surgeon thefts and the odd Toussaint Urvoy affair.
